Do you ever have seasons in your life of wondering how God can use you, or how you could be a part of this most amazing plan He has constructed to offer eternal life to the world, and what part there is for you to play? Sometimes I feel so consumed with the busyness, the chaos, the constant onslaught of life, that I feel ‘outside of the body’. Like a stray hair that’s fallen out, or a forgotten piece which isn’t really of use.
It blows me away when I realise anew that His great plan for the world to understand, believe and turn to Him actually includes ME! I am a part of this great body, and of His great plan.
In John 17:20-26 Jesus prays for all believers:
20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as You are in me and I am in You. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that You have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that You gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and You in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that You sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.
24 “Father, I want those You have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory You have given me because You loved me before the creation of the world.
25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know You, I know You, and they know that You have sent me. 26 I have made You known to them, and will continue to make You known in order that the love You have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
Here are a few things to consider in this passage:
1. That we as believers may be one, as Jesus and His Father are one. By being one with Jesus and the Father, the world may believe that God has sent Jesus to pay for our sin.
2. We have been given the glory that the Lord gave Jesus so that we can have complete Unity.
3. Through this complete Unity the world will know that the Lord has sent Jesus, and therefore know of His great love for them.
Therefore, the basis of unity in the body of Christ is the shared truth in Jesus Christ.
Do you think of yourself as linked with the life of God – so much so that you cannot be known or understood apart from that life? Think about the staggering truth that we can be one just as the Father and Jesus are one. The understanding of that is what produces unity and devotion among believers. After being a Christian for many years, I am still on the journey of understanding this more fully. The more I learn who God is, how He loved me first and gave up His life for me, and how He knows me better than I know myself, the more I understand how I am linked with the life of God. Not only that, but I also realise that I am a part of His body which brings His message to the world.
Lord, You have made me one with believers in all places at all times. May that unity be reflected in all that I do. Amen.
